Excellent private tracker accepting new members.

If you are into the world of bit torrents then you will know that getting membership to good private tracker sites can often only be achieved by joining waiting lists or being invited so I was excited to find a site recently called supreme-speeds.com that is accepting new members.

supreme-speeds is quite a new site to the bit torrent scene but is fast gaining a healthy reputation for having a good mix of the latest torrents across a variety of catagories and there is a wide choice of movies,tv shows, music, applications and much more.

As with all private tracker sites you will be expected to seed back torrents after you have downloaded them.A minimum of 48 hours or to a ratio of 1:1 whichever comes first is required and members launching “hit and run”attacks on torrents will soon find themselves banned from the site.If however, you don’t have the time or the bandwith to seed back torrents there are a wide range of donation packages available will will allow you to gain VIP status and avoid the minimum seeding rules. These donations of course also help to keep the site alive.

As the name would suggest supreme-speeds pride themselves on providing blisteringly fast download speeds but the site also has much more to offer including a very informative and friendly forum,it’s own irc channel and a well used homepage shoutbox.

So,if you enjoy the world of torrents sign up at supreme-speeds.com today because with a site this good I’m sure it won’t be very long before membership is by invitation only.

Have a great day,Lou Smorals.

Orange blocks internet customers from visiting The Pirate Bay.

Internet service provider Orange have banned their UK and french customers from visiting the world's biggest bit torrent tracker The Pirate Bay.Since the end of last week Orange customers have found it impossible to use what is claimed to be the 25th most popular website in the world, receiving an error message that the site is not available. However the site is very much available but not to Orange customers.

My best guess as to why this has happened is that like many other ISPs Orange offer unlimited downloads with many of it's internet packages and are trying to limit the amount that subscribers can actually download by denying it's customers access to the most popular file sharing site in the world in case they should download more than Orange considers to be their fair share.

No stranger to criticism, in March 2007 UK consumer protection TV show ‘Watchdog’ held a survey which deemed Orange to be the worst ISP in the UK, with the most unreliable broadband service. The survey revealed that the company also had the greatest number of dissatisfied customers and, if recent reports prove correct, Orange are about to start accumulating a few more.

The owners of The Pirate Bay are no strangers to the courts and have successfully sued other ISPs in the past who have blocked their site and in this case I hope that they grab Orange by their company gonads, drag them into court and sue their asses off because this is clearly corporate thuggery of the worst kind.

And of course how do I know about this problem?Yes,you've guessed it I am an Orange customer and so have had the same problem as all their other users but if you are in the same situation as me don't panic because the problem is easy to solve. The solution is to access The Pirate Bay via a proxy server so that there is no direct link for Orange to detect and block.Simply google "free proxy"and you will find dozens of sites that you can use and there is nothing that Orange can do to stop you accessing your favourite tracker.

Worst of all,the last press release that I saw from Orange regarding this problem said,

"Our understanding is that Orange doesn’t block access to any sites other than those identified by the Internet Watch Foundation, that relate to illegal child abuse imagery. However, we’re looking into this and will update you again as soon as we can"

and so it would seem that they don't even have the guts to admit what they are doing.

Now what's that slogan I'm thinking of?

The future's bright,the future's...........hmm.

Using Google to find "unsecurity cameras"

Recently I read a report that thousands of security cameras around the world could be accessed by typing a simple command into Google.Being of a curious nature I decided to have a look and see what all the fuss was about.

It would be fair to say that I was dumbstruck by the results.Thousands if not tens of thousands of links to cameras in all kinds of locations will be displayed as search results. These cameras can be literally anywhere from traffic cameras to indoor and outdoor security cameras in workplaces, shopping malls, public buildings etc.and are there for all the world to see.

Being able to access these cameras would seem to be an enormous oversight on the behalf of the people who install and program them and I wonder how many people who are at work now know that the cameras in their workplace can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection.

Well I suppose after reading this post you want to have a look for yourself so to access this network of cameras simply type the line below into Google.

Vista Sidebar Gadgets.

Like millions of people around the world,I have for some time been a windows vista user and love it or hate it (and there are some bits I really hate),it is here to stay so I’ve set about making the best of it.

One of the features I have become quite fond of is the Vista sidebar and I have been trying all sorts of gadgets from clocks to application launchers and radio players etc,to see what they do and how well they do it.One of my problems has been finding collections of gadgets to try to see which ones I like. There are a wide variety available from Microsoft but I find their site a little slow and clumsy to use when searching their database of gadgets,so I was very interested when I saw a collection of 250 different gadgets for sale at Ebay.

As the price was only £2.50 (approx $5.00) inc.p&p for the cd of 250 gadgets I decided to buy them and I am very happy with the collection. This selection really does contain a gadget for just about any occasion and it would be easy to fill my sidebar several times over with things that I would probably never use but look good but I’m gradually working my way through them all and finding out exactly what they all do.

Details of the collection of 250 different Vista sidebar gadgets on one cd that I bought can be found here.

Dot TK free short domain names and free email.

Yesterday whilst putting together a free website for a local charity group I stumbled across one of the best free internet related services I think I've ever seen.

This service is Dot TK who supply free domain names and email redirection services so that you can have a nice neat domain name for your website or blog and free email addresses using your domain name that you can redirect to the mailbox of your choice.

There are some great free webspace services available these days, even some that contain no advertising but one problem that I've found with these free services is that the website address you end up with can be a little long and clumsy especially if you want to forward it to other people or print it on flyers or business cards etc.So unless you want to buy your own domain name and point at your site you're stuck with your long web address.

Dot TK solves this problem because you can get free of charge "your domain name".tk which you can point at your free site and so have a nice short neat web address at zero cost. Also you can have free email addresses @your domain and redirect the emails to any inbox you choose.

In order to demonstrate just how good these services are I have set them up for this blog so now rather than having to give my friends my blog address of http://lousmorals.blogspot.com/ I can now just give them http://lousmorals.tk/ which I'm sure you'll agree is much neater, nicer and easier to remember.I now also have the email address of lou@lousmorals.tk which again I'm sure you agree looks pretty professional and easy to remember.

So if you'd like a nice short web address for your site and some free email adresses for it take a look at http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html?lang=en

have a great weekend,Lou Smorals.

Completely removing McAfee Antivirus.

Recently I have switched antivirus programs from McAfee to Norton but after uninstalling McAfee I noticed that certain elements of it had remained on my hard drive. This appears to be yet another case of software manafacturers deciding that they know what's best for us and as a Windows Vista user I know all about "big brother"software but I'll save that rant for another day.

Anyway to get back to my McAfee problem after a bit of Googling I found that there is a tool available for free download that will completely remove all traces of McAfee from your hardrive and so if you have are using McAfee Antivirus and want to completely remove it from your computer the steps to follow go like this:-

Step 1: Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.

Step 2: Go to Start and then Control Panel, and then Add/Remove Programs

Step 3: Select Your McAfee product from the list and select Remove.

Step 4: Once removal is complete, reboot your computer.

Step 5: Run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool you downloaded to your desktop
earlier.

Step 6: once the tool completes, restart your computer and McAfee removal is now complete.

You will now be completely McAfee free and it will not be needlessly tying up space on your hardrive.

As for the Norton product that I'm now using it seems to be just fine and not too much of a drain on my system and although it might not be to everybody's taste I like the Vista sidebar gadget that comes with Norton showing you your protection level in real time and allowing you to access the program with one click from your sidebar.

Have a great and safe day.Lou Smorals.

Getting Google to find your blog.

You will notice that there has been quite a while since my last post on this blog and that has been because I have been going through the process of making this blog show up in Google searches. As this is my first attempt at blogging getting my blog recognised by Google was a bit of a steep learning curve but I have suceeded in the end and below you will find details of how I did it.

The first thing I did was to follow the instructions in my blog dashboard to get it Google verified, then to be on the safe side I also submitted my blog url athttp://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl.

After doing this I read the section in my blog dashboard about creating a sitemap for Google to find.I must admit to being a little dazed and confused by what I read so I searched for more information.I was lucky enough to find a guide at http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/2006/04/adding-google-sitemap-to-your-blog.html and after following the very clear and understand instructions I got my sitemap sorted and submitted.A big thanks to Peter for this guide as it really made things a lot easier for me.

After you have done all of the above all that you can really do is sit back and wait.It will take time for Google to get round to finding your blog and in my caes it took a few weeks so don't panic and be patient because it will find you eventually.

I hope this post will be of some use to someone and that you all have a great day,Lou Smorals.

Why God plays poker.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page you will see a photo of the sign at my local church announcing that I am the guest speaker for the next few sundays. The subject of my talks is "why God plays Texas Holdem"and is an attempt to show the values that can be learnt from playing the game.

My subject yesterday was that poker teaches both mental and physical discipline as in order to play well you need the mental discipline to understand the rules, assess the game as it is played and the patience to wait for the right hands to play even if they are few and far between and you also need the physical discipline not to let your manner betray the hand you are playing.

My talk with our local congregation went quite well yesterday, helped I think by the fact that our church is attended by many lovers of the game and so let's hope next sunday goes as well.

When I decided to start writing this blog I made a descision that it would not be full of banners and Google ads etc.as this is not an attempt to earn money but simply a place to air my views on life as I see it but you will notice that on the left side of this page there is just one advertisment for a site that provides free poker teaching and $150.00 completely free to start your poker playing career without risking your own money. This is where I learnt to play and whilst I don't claim to be a great player it was nice to learn the game and have access to lots of information without parting with any cash so if you are a keen to learn or an existing player who would like a little tuition and a free bankroll the feel free to click the ad and take a look.

Well that's about that for today, hopefully there will be something in tomorrows news for me to comment on and this blog will be back to normal.

Have a great and safe day,Lou Smorals.

Short selling,can it be right?

After all we have seen in the media in the last few weeks about the financial world being bought to it's knees by short sellers I decided yesterday to do a little research and see what short selling is all about.

I was amazed by what I read.I started at www.wikipedia.org and then did some archive reading at http://www.ft.com/ and I will try to explain things as I understand them.

Short sellers borrow stocks and shares and sell them in order to force down the price.Later they then buy back the shares at a lower price and return them to the owner, keeping the profit they have made from the deal.

It would seem that the really big money is being made by not what we would think of as share traders but by really clever mathematicians sitting at computer screens.I suppose this is what we call progress but what worries me about the whole thing is that the realism seems to have left the stock markets and nobody sees the bigger picture or what the outcome of their actions might be,all they see is numbers.

A classic case of this is the collapse of the share price of the UK bank HBOS this week and its subsequent purchase by Lloyds TSB,and so my point for today is this. The HBOS collapse has resulted in 1,000s of small investors losing money and the takeover by Lloyds TSB will result in probably 1,000s of job losses, and so did the short sellers see those ordinary people losing money and jobs when they pressed the button and short sold HBOS?I think not.

Have a great weekend,Lou Smorals.

The energy company salesman cometh.

This morning we got the now almost weekly ring on the doorbell from the energy company salesman trying to get us to change to his company for our household gas and electricity supplies.

I don't know where the companies get these people from but I wonder if they have them bred specially because they are certainly in a class of their own. They always seem to be young men between about 20 and 30 in a shirt and tie with their ID badge clipped to it and no matter how bad the weather they never wear a coat.As they quite often turn up in the depths of winter, still in shirt sleeves I often ponder just what kind of energy they run their salesmen on!

Anyway as usual the young man had his script to work from and began by asking who supplied our gas and electricity. When I told him he imedialtely gave me the stock reply that my company's prices were due to rise very shortly and his would be much better. Now I don't mind people trying to earn a living and these young men are doing a thankless job by trudging the streets every day cold calling members of the public but it seems that they are given no meaninfull information to work with as when I asked him by how much my company's prices were going to rise he just gave me a very blank look and when I asked what percentage his company would be cheaper by no answer was forthcoming and a look of slight panic began to cross his face.It would seem that his employers just expect him to tell everyone that they will be cheaper and he will be believed.Yes of course he will.we all blindly take as gospel the word of a travelling salesman who has just disturbed our morning, now don't we?So I suppose my point to this post is if these companies are going to send these poor individuals out in all weathers to try and earn a commission only living then at least give them the tools to have a realistic attempt at the job.

Fortunately, just before the recent 40%+ rise in gas prices we signed a 3 year fixed price deal with our current energy supplier and so we are at least safe in the knowledge that no enormous bills will drop on the Smorals doormat for the next 36 months and as much as I pity these young men who spend their days getting doors closed in their faces there is no point in them coming to our door because for the next 3 years we are tied to our current gas and electricity company and so the sign at the main gate of the Smorals estate that advises all comers that we do not welcome hawkers, tinkers, knife grinders etc,now also bears the legend "we have a 3 year deal with our energy supplier".

Life with Lou Smorals a view of life from the U.K.

Hello and welcome to life with Lou Smorals a view of life as I see it from Smorals Towers here in Northern England.

I shall be trying on a day by day basis to bring you items of interest on subjects that have caught my eye that I think are worthy of discussion.there are no hard and fast rules as to the topics I shall be writing about and an average post could be any topic could be any subject from share prices to salmon and hopefully of interest not only to people here in the U.K. but readers worldwide.
